Mecca Bingo Dundee Playhouse is one of Britain’s oldest clubs, having been based on the site of the old theatre since 1968, although a fire in 1995 means the only thing remaining from the original building is the tower – which you can’t miss! We don’t know much about the club other than it opened in 1983, and closed in the late 1990s. It opened originally as the Kings Theatre & Hippodrome in 1909, a large theatre which became the King’s Theatre Cinema in 1928 after being taken over by Provincial Cinematograph Theatres(PCT). It was again taken over by the Gaumont chain in 1929 as were many cinemas of the day. It wasn’t renamed Gaumont until 1951 however. In 1973 it became an Odeon Cinema, which in turn closed in 1981, and two years later became County Bingo. The future of the building is uncertain, which is a shame, as many of the original features remain, although much of them hidden by a latterly added suspended ceiling.
